Who’s Afraid of Kanye West?

Kanye rockin' Raf Simons

Given the headlines it is clear that the media want everyone to believe there is something suspicious in the ambitions of Kanye West. Suddenly everyone knows better than Mr. West. It’s interesting (though not at all not surprising) to discover the arrogant tone taken by the media toward his aspirations. Naturally someone immediately used in the N-word to remind everyone of Kanye’s place and most of those that didn’t explicitly use the N-word threw figurative salt on his game:

1. He’s an insomniac (read: he’s got problems)

2. Unlike Steve Jobs, Kanye West lacks focus (read: not good enough)

3. He’s surely not sober (read: he’s got problems),

4. Let me translate his tweets for you (he’s stupid and doesn’t communicate well)

The lady doth protest too much! Must we ask why no one heard such reservations when Bono sought to cure Africa of AIDS by creating the RED label? It seems a Black man with high aspirations and a view to greatness cannot quote George Bernard Shaw or Leonardo da Vinci and expect to be taken seriously—not unless this is done in the context of providing entertainment, playing sports or selling drugs.

For all anyone knows the greatest talents of Kanye West are yet to be seen and will be discovered in his ability to organize his teams toward the realization of his vision. He certainly has the resources to achieve this. And that’s why I ask, who’s afraid of Kanye West? A whole lot of people in media for sure…and probably a whole lot more.

Let’s not forget it was Ovid who wrote ”Envy aims very high”.
